Mankind exists to support men* affected by unwanted sexual experiences.
We use the term ‘unwanted sexual experience’ to include any non-consensual or unwanted act of sexualised violence, coercion, manipulation or abuse including (but not limited to) childhood sexual abuse, sexual assault, and rape. However, these are formal terms and it is entirely up to an individual to give whatever name they wish to their experience.
Since 2000, we have been developing and delivering male-focused services that enable men to deal with the issues created by unwanted sexual experiences and create a better future for themselves.
1 in 6 men have been affected by unwanted sexual experiences
Given the demographics of the UK, that’s about 130,000 men in Sussex
That’s potentially over 5 million across England & Wales
Most of these men will experience deep feelings of confusion, guilt and shame. Many will never tell anyone about what happened to them. Those who do speak out will take an average of 26 years to do so.
This confusion, guilt & shame hurt men, causing problems such as:
- Anxiety & depression
- Low self-esteem
- Difficulties in personal relationships
- Suicidal thoughts or attempts
- Difficulties at work or in education
These problems hurt men & the wider community through broader social issues such as:
- Relationship difficulties
- Distant parenting
- Family breakdown
- Alcohol & drug abuse
- Antisocial behaviour
